Lewisia disepala is a rare and precious wildflower of the California Sierra Nevada. It grows in the highest alpine regions emerging for only a few days each year on gravel or rocky outcroppings as the snow melts. It produces a basal rosette of tiny succulent leaves, barely a half inch long. The delicately banded pink and white blossom is proportionally much larger, with a stem so short, that the flower rests directly on the leaf rosette. Sitting in contemplation of the enchanting Lewisia, one has the distinct feeling that its spiritual archetype has literally dropped from the highest heaven world. Each blossom is sparkling with iridescent silica beads, shimmering in the light of the sun, as though mirroring a distant Star World. This exquisite “star flower” sits aloft a physical structure that is barely incarnated compared to most other plants that develop roots, leaves and stems over a period of time before blossoming. This soul picture of Lewisia helps us to understand its ...

Gorse (Ulex europaeus) is a remarkable plant. While it comes to its fullest bloom in early spring, it is capable of unfolding its radiant yellow blossoms even in the depths of winter’s gloom. This strong and resilient quality is reflected in its sun-bright color, and also its structure; featuring sharp, thorn-like spines growing amidst its branches right into the flowering region. A member of the legume/ Fabaceae family, Gorse has bi-lateral “pea shaped” blossoms, and tenacious roots. Like other legumes, Gorse helps catalyze nitrogen from the upper atmosphere – with a special ability to bring fertility and vitality to otherwise isolated and barren places where other vegetation cannot flourish. These penetrating, fierce qualities of Gorse help us understand why ...

One of the delights as spring approaches here at Terra Flora, is finding our charming violets (Viola odorata) gently emerge from grassy meadows and woodlands at the slightest hint of expanding light and warmth. [...] As its name implies, the Violet flower is colored in rich purple, emitting a delicately sweet, yet evanescent aroma. In soul language, its color speaks of profound spiritual sensitivity. The Violet flower type is one who can easily access ...

Recently we convened for our annual staff retreat here at FES, enjoying a lunch featuring foods from Terra Flora, and our regional community. A highlight was having Nicolasa Torrres Ortega and Filiberto Ortega prepare the Hopi corn we grew here in our gardens for tamales. How wonderful to have the blue corn ground fresh and whole to make such delicious tamales, according to the traditional method of preparation. Like the ancestors who cultivated the Hopi Blue Corn, we consider it to have a sacred presence on our land. The corn creates a strong elemental force field anchoring and aligning the whole of Terra Flora. Corn has always been revered not only for ...

Remembering the enchanting fragrance of the Lilac blossom on this stormy winter’s day, its soothing light purple color, I recall the halcyon days of mid-spring, with a gentle, warm breeze wafting floral scents and bird sounds my way. Anyone who has delighted in the Lilac blossoms knows implicitly the evocative power of aroma to evoke memory, and the peaceful lilac color, inviting us to relax from the frenetic activity of daily life, to allow the wellsprings of a deeper memory to flow in to our awareness and deeply nourish us. Such is the healing message of the Lilac flower essence. It is well and good to confront suppressed painful memories, trauma and abuse which have numbed our emotions. Yet, we also need to cultivate positive memories, particularly from childhood, which can connect us to our source of inspiration of joy in life. For example, ...

On these cold days of winter, our thoughts turn to warm sunny moments at Terra Flora, and visions of our most beloved blossoms. One of our favorites is Chamomile – so prolific with flowers, and adored by both butterflies and bees, with its ethereal sweet scent wafting in warm light. A member of the Compositae or Asteraceae (Sunflower) family of plants, Chamomile is easy to recognize with its daisy-like white flowers and golden raised center. A seven year old visitor to our gardens summed up its most distinctive feature: “Mommy has me drink Chamomile tea when my tummy doesn’t feel good – and now I know why. Because the flowers all have little tummies.” Indeed the bulging center of the Chamomile is...

When we reflect on the year that has passed, we realize that what inspires and informs our work is not so much the “news” described by external media. Rather it is the countless tender moments that stream into us from so many parts of our precious planet – the stories of the flowers inscribed on the pages of the human heart. It is the amazing chronicle of how the human soul is renewed and illumined by allowing the Voice of the Flowers to speak. It is one of the many touching reports from...

In the cacophony of holiday hustle and bustle, it is all too easy to miss the quiet voice that speaks within our souls. Spiritually, as we enter the dark time of winter solstice (now in the northern hemisphere), and the holy days and nights that follow, we are given the opportunity to find light within. In the still of the night, our dreams can speak to us from the sanctuary of the soul, if we can still ourselves enough to hear their gentle whisper. We can facilitate such an inner journey with the right preparation and guidance, and that is why

Scotch Broom flower essence is an antidote to pessimism and despair, not so much about our personal situation, but rather about our relationship to world events. We were reminded of the timeliness of its message several weeks ago when we received a report from a woman who found the Scotch Broom helpful to deal with the U.S.Presidential election and its aftermath. She said that the essence brought her “deep peace and clarity.” Rather than reacting to events, she felt connected to her inner guidance about what she should do next. She commented, “It doesn't feel like I'm fighting against anything; it feels like I am continuing to build toward everything to which I am committed — a world that works for everyone.” Scotch Broom essence has also been used for people facing ...
