Lewisia disepala is a rare and precious wildflower of the California Sierra Nevada. It grows in the highest alpine regions emerging for only a few days each year on gravel or rocky outcroppings as the snow melts. It produces a basal rosette of tiny succulent leaves, barely a half inch long. The delicately banded pink and white blossom is proportionally much larger, with a stem so short, that the flower rests directly on the leaf rosette. Sitting in contemplation of the enchanting Lewisia, one has the distinct feeling that its spiritual archetype has literally dropped from the highest heaven world. Each blossom is sparkling with iridescent silica beads, shimmering in the light of the sun, as though mirroring a distant Star World. Recently we convened for our annual staff retreat here at FES, enjoying a lunch featuring foods from Terra Flora, and our regional community. A highlight was having Nicolasa Torrres Ortega and Filiberto Ortega prepare the Hopi corn we grew here in our gardens for tamales. How wonderful to have the blue corn ground fresh and whole to make such delicious tamales, according to the traditional method of preparation. Remembering the enchanting fragrance of the Lilac blossom on this stormy winter’s day, its soothing light purple color, I recall the halcyon days of mid-spring, with a gentle, warm breeze wafting floral scents and bird sounds my way. Anyone who has delighted in the Lilac blossoms knows implicitly the evocative power of aroma to evoke memory, and the peaceful lilac color, inviting us to relax from the frenetic activity of daily life, to allow the wellsprings of a deeper memory to flow in to our awareness and deeply nourish us. On these cold days of winter, our thoughts turn to warm sunny moments at Terra Flora, and visions of our most beloved blossoms. One of our favorites is Chamomile – so prolific with flowers, and adored by both butterflies and bees, with its ethereal sweet scent wafting in warm light. Scotch Broom flower essence is an antidote to pessimism and despair, not so much about our personal situation, but rather about our relationship to world events.
