Mugwort: Grounded Bodily Awareness and Expansion of Consciousness
Nov 03, 2016
Mugwort (Artemisia douglasiana) is in the same botanical tribe as Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata); however Sagebrush flourishes in hot, dry and sparse conditions, while Mugwort enjoys a mix of sun and shade, and grows along riverbanks or other areas that allow its roots to be moist. Both plants are named for the Greek Moon Deity Artemis, bearing pungent silver-green leaves that shimmer in lunar light. With Sagebrush we discover the qualities of the new moon, the ability to allow quiet solitude and “positive emptiness.” On the other hand, Mugwort has more affinity to water and to the full moon. With Mugwort, we are addressing a quality of psychic radiance and expansive warmth. The Mugwort flower essence helps those who need to cultivate a state of body-soul consciousness that is simultaneously grounded yet spaciously integrated with higher soul dimensions.
Artemisia douglasiana was used by Native American tribes as a medicinal plant to relieve feelings of constriction such as joint pain and headaches, and to treat many menstrual abnormalities in women. It was also used for ceremonial purposes, especially to promote consciousness in the dream state, and spiritual communication.
A closely related form of Mugwort is widely used throughout the Orient as “moxa” to simulate circulation and activate key meridian points, and to allow relaxation and opening of the birth canal during childbirth.
When we smell the golden tufts of the Mugwort flower, or rub one of its leaves in our hands, we have a feeling for the soul mood which this plant imparts — its pungent aroma grounds our senses and bodily awareness, but at the same time its warmth lifts and expands our consciousness. In the Greek temple of Ephesus, Artemis was depicted as a many-breasted goddess, a picture of the overflowing fertility and spaciousness which we feel at summer when the earth is covered with flowers and fruits, and is breathing fully into the cosmos.
The flower essence of Mugwort helps to harmonize psychic potential within the soul, especially the ability to bring more consciousness and cohesion between one’s daytime awareness and the nighttime experiences of dreaming. It is helpful as well for many conditions of feeling shut down, cold or numb; with a sense of constriction or susceptibility to many states of pain, due to lack of warmth and spacious connection.
The Mugwort Moon Magic FloraFusions oil is popular choice for massage or baths, encouraging healthy circulation and night-time relaxation for sleep and dreams. As well it is used widely by many woman to assist in menstrual flow and to ease cramping and related feelings of constriction and pain. For similar reasons, Mugwort is used by many birth practitioners to facilitate birthing, allowing more ease and opening in the birth canal.
