On a recent walk, we delighted in seeing Canyon Dudleya (Dudleya cymosa) bloom in canyons along the Yuba River, in Nevada County, California. It is an intriguing native plant with succulent leaves thriving in marginal soils, neatly tucked into the cracks and crevices of rock outcroppings. What a delightful contrast between its flaming flower and swollen watery leaves! Truly this native plant celebrates a unique alchemy in the dance of fire and water. The watery element (or phlegmatic temperament) instills grace, ease and gentle rhythm, while the fire element (choleric temperament) promotes expressive individuality, activity and exuberance. The soul who needs Canyon Dudleya is unable to find peaceful accord with the water element and its quieter inward disposition, thus over-emphasizing the fire element.
In the attempt to expand and project the personality, one can inflame or inflate the smallest details of life, typically producing stress, tension or conflict. This unconscious need to create “trauma-drama” helps one to feel fully alive and self-important. Many times these behavior traits are inherited from one’s family or culture. If this level of imbalance becomes chronic, it can eat its way into the body, with up and down swings of energy such as hypoglycemia, adrenal exhaustion, and/or blood pressure abnormalities.
It is typical for one who needs Canyon Dudleya to report that “nothing happened” when first taking the flower essence. This soul type craves a healing response that is stimulating and outwardly manifest. Yet what is really needed is calm centering, sustained rhythm and ordering of the inner life. With this shift, the true fire of the higher self can find joy, inspiration and motivation in the daily unfolding of life with all of its precious simplicity.
For example, a single mother who used Canyon Dudleya over a period of time reported:
“I started out thinking it was my child who needed Canyon Dudleya for his temper tantrums and theatrical outbursts. However, when I examined myself honestly, I realized it was me who was addicted to drama, tension and stress of all kinds, having grown up in a ‘Canyon Dudleya’ extended family. So I took Canyon Dudleya, too. At first I noticed “nothing.” It took me a while to realize the subtle shift coming over me. I became enormously happy doing the simplest things with my son – playing, making dinner together, reading stories, crafting….things that usually escaped me, or I thought were too boring became enormously interesting. The calmer I became, the less stress my son evidenced. Go figure!”
This affirmation for Canyon Dudleya by Patricia Kaminski captures its healing essence:
The ordinary brings order to my Life.
Practical living becomes spiritual practice.
I find radiance in the quiet sanctuary of my soul.
I become greater through embracing what is smaller.
